How to select the right Airsoft BB
Airosft Article by OnTarget Airsoft
When it comes to Airsoft guns, most enthusiasts tend to think about gun models, gearbox type, Barrel FPS, and battery size. One thing that constantly gets over looked is BB type. There is a variety of Airsoft BBs available, in a wide range of weights, colors, and materials. So, which one do you choose and why is it so important?
MANUFACTURER - This is probably the number one criteria in choosing an Airsoft BB. Look for a manufacturer that produces a seamless, highly polished BB. Additionally, the ability of the manufacturer to produce BBs that are consistent in size and weight is equally important. Not only will these characteristics improve your guns distance and accuracy, they will also reduce wear on your airsoft gun's internals. Airsoft BBs by companies like TSD Tactical BBs, SRC BBs and KSC BBs are of excellent quality. Many of the BBs included with your airsoft gun are of poor quality and should be discarded (our recommendation).
WEIGHT - Airsoft BBs are almost always 6mm in diameter, not much selection there. Then it comes to weight, Airsoft BBs start at .12 grams and go as heavy as .36 grams. Save the .12g BBs for your Spring Pistols or low priced, cheap plastic Airsoft guns. Using .12g BBs in metal gear guns is recipe for disaster, plus it will make your gun as accurate as a water balloon launcher. The rest of the BBs weights are personal preference and gun usage. A good starting guideline is a gun that shoots under 300FPS is best served with .20 Gram BBs. Anything that shoots over 300FPS opens up more choices. The heavier the BB, the greater the accuracy at longer ranges. For example, if your using a sniper rifle you should consider .28gram or heavier. For standard field play .23 - .25gram will be fine. Finally, .20 gram will work great in Close Quarters Battle (CQB). Obviously, cost is a factor when choosing your BBs weight. The heavier the Airsoft BB the more they will cost and the more you'll spend on shipping.
MATERIAL - Most of your Airsoft BBs are made of ABS or some sort of plastic. There are a few other types too. The most well know is the Biodegradable BB. They are made of materials that break down when exposed to moisture and light. Some of the Bio airsoft BBs even have an organic Fertilizer core to help vegetation. While these may seem great in reducing BBs from accumulating, keep in mind they do have a limited shelf life. The other material is Aluminum. These are typically BBs that .28g-.36g BBs. They are very expensive but are great for long range shooting.
COLOR - The most popular is white. but really the choice is up to you. Most of the time you want to be able to see where you're Airsoft BBs are hitting, so the lighter and brighter the color the better. If you are doing sniper operations, then you might want to use the darker colored or Black BBs. They will help conceal your location when firing on an opponent.
As you can see, Airsoft BB selection is more than buying the cheapest BBs you can find. Consider all the options and you'll maximize your Airsoft gun's ability, accuracy and life span. For a wide range of Airsoft BBs check out or website OnTarget Airsoft

What Airsoft BB weight do you prefer and why?Loading...
the .25g work great in my AGM M14 sniper rifle. Pretty accurate up to almost 200 feet. The .12g do suck unless your shooting out of a flea market spring gun. Great BB info!
really good post. I can't say this enough. Buy the best bb's you can get and NEVER reuse bb's. Even if you a shooting into a target box. One speck of dirt and you are replacing somthing. I use ICS precision competition grade high polished bb's. They are slicker than turkey crap through a tin horn and highly accurate.
i use .20 in my jg M4 cqb ($150) gun they are hitting my back fence (50 ft) and denting my fence(brand new)
never use the bbs that come with a gun. they are low quality and can break in your gun and breaK your gun. i reccomend using those for a spring pistol or some other spring gun you may have
What grain BB should I use with my new MP001/VSR10??
Yea my friend got me a 125$ aeg and he use the ones that came in the box and the gun jamed and I had to fix it this gos twords saying use the cheep bbs for mines grenades and shotguns/pistols

I just got a Foreign Legion Famas AEG. It shoots 361 fps with .20 gram bbs, should I get those (i'm using .12)or a higher weight?
i got a 400 FPS DBoys Full Metal M4 CQB-SD AEG Rifle w/ Reinforced 7mm Gearbox - ENHANCED 2010 MODEL should i use .23 gram or something else
I just got a new crosman like a month ago and personally i think its a peice of uhhh **** so any way its a crosman pulse r71 and the FPS or velocity is only 200 IT SUCKS any way i have no money for a new one but what should i be shooting out of this gun ( i shoot .12's now) and if i shoot .20's are they goiing to increase either the distance or the velocity??please help
I want to get a 325 fps gun. what ammo should i use??
Haha i have a 410 fps with .28 gram bb's sniper and tried
.30's and I like the .28's better from the same distance they
are pretty much the same at accuracy for me but should I use the
.30's?
For a 415 fps (chrono'd with .20g BBs) JG MP5 RAS, should I use .25g or stick with .20g for CQB?
Beginner2Airsoft,
Although I'm also a beginner, everything I've read has said that the required weight for most CQB is .20.
im getting a mp40 full metal is 400 fps what bbs shuld i use please help i dont want to break this gun is expensive
Evil Kitty Terrorist, you might want to go with something more than a .20g BB because yours shoots more than 400FPS Try a .23 or .25
The evil kitty terrorist,
I would definitely recommend 0.25 gram + for that gun.
If you actually care about your gun, go use BB Bastard BB's. They are a bit more expensive but why would you run crap through your gun?
i was wondering if it is okay to mix bbs into a pistol and s32p (shotgun) ?? and should i use glow n dark bbs in pistols and shotgun ??
I just got a new R71 2 days ago and it dont shoot for **** at least with the bbs i got idk what kinds of bbs i should use have no idea what kind im using but they fire and roll out the gun they wouldnt hurt a fly let along leave a bruse some one help please
I just bought a Walther P99c "Special Operations" (Clear) from Kmart. It's got a plastic body, but metal parts inside. It's a spring-load. It claims 280fps @ .12g (BB weight). It's sold by UmarexUSA. I paid $20 + tax for it.
It comes with a bottle of 400 .12g blue plastic BBs.
My 12 yr. old son has a bottle of biodegradable .20g pellets, but they're for his $100+ AK-47 we bought him for Christmas, from Big 5.
The only ammo I have access to is a huge squarish bottle (2000+ pellets, I think) of glow-in-the-dark .12g pellets and the bottle of 400 .12g blue pellets that came with the my Walther P99.
I've read that .12g pellets are a recipe for disaster in any gun. Is this a 100% absolute always fact? Am I going to ruin my gun by even using the pellets it came with? That seems crazy, if true.
My son's Crosman Stinger P9 (clear), purchased at Walmart, broke a plastic piece in the ammo clip release lever area and now the gun is useless (lever fell out and the gun won't hold a clip anymore). I liked the feel of the gun better, but I think the Walther P99 is higher quality and will (hopefully) last longer. And it cost less, too, oddly enough!
A crosman...BOO i feal ur pain I got a new R71 it dont even shoot the bbs just fall out not even a inch sometimes it fires three at a time which ant as good as u would think they fall out to sometimes it wont fire at all it should come with a label YOU ARE GETTING RIPED OFF
I have a Double Eagle M21 Pistol, spring, it shoots around 250 fps, which pellets should I get?
6mm Metal Airsoft BBs .30g 500 Rounds - High Quality Sniper Ultra Polished Aluminum can I use this bb in my sig sauer p226 fullmetal blowback gas pistol please help me
I have an M4 that shoots at about 340 fps and Im using .20 bbs that travel 100 ft no problem but is not that accurate would .25 work better?
in order to know weather or not bbs will be the best for your gun, you need to try them and see what works best for you, your range, speed etc. its all about how you play airsoft. (ex. range)
I just got the Cheytac M2000 from SOCOM, and I use .12g but it doesn't work so well? and I heard a funny noise once when I shot with them yesterday. Should I stick with .12g?
here is what it comes down too: the lighter the bb, the faster fps it will have but the accuracy will be ****y if ur gun shoots over 325 fps.
All of these tacos are killing me!
Everyone, as long as you do not use .12g BBs in your guns, you're good. Although, I've seen quite a few comments from people who can't decide between either .20g,.23g,.25g etc. So, I'll stress on that matter for a little bit.
First of all, for CQB missions, .20g BBs is more than enough for your gun to shoot accurately and efficiently. I know, it is true that the heavier the BBs, the more accurate they are. But, as you gain accuracy with the heavier BBs, you're also losing range. And keep in mind that most, and I say again, most BBs that weigh above .20g are designed for sniper rifles and/or LMGs.
Hope this comment helped, happy airsofting.
Ak-47 springed power 238 fps. What bb bullet should i use? or is it ripped off?
Unidentified.
U should use .20 grams but .12 grams shoot farther but curve some. If u use .20 grand in that gun it shoots pretty short but it won't curve, just drop from gravity
I have a M4 Full plastic with spring. It shoots 322 fps with .12 g ammo as the compagny of the gun wrote on the box of the gun... Is it better to use .2 g ammo even if my gun is full plastic?
I just got a Crosman R34 Stinger and i paid 50$ for it and i don't know if i should use 20 gram or 12 gram?
i just got my electric gun shud i use my crosman .12 "premium ammo"?
Ok so i will soon be purchasing a D-Boys M4 CQB-R which comes with (pre) factory installed tightbore barrel, now I know what weight to use, either .23 or .25, but im scared what company i use, becuase i hear alot of complaints about bbs jamming in TB barrels, and makes me scared cause i dont know about much about internals and im going to be paying half for the gun, so which brand makes the best .25 gramm bbs
that cool
that cool
Im getting a src sr36 aeg for $200 I'm not sure if I should use my "premium" .12s or .20s or .25s
are ICS bb's okay? or will they ruin your gun?
Im using tsd .20g bbs in my tsd tactical sd97 bolt action sniper rifle should i use something heavier?
i getting a new TSD L96a1 AWP SD96-OD AIRSOFT Gun Bolt Action Sniper Rifle i sure u can use metal bbs but is it better for a sniper
Airsoftsniper you should use .25 bbs or heavier.
what do you think about goldenball BBs like these http://wholesaleairsoftgunshq.com/buy-wholesale-go
i have a barret sniper that i gave my kid for xmas and i got him .12 bb's from walmart and it was 10,000 of them. He said he used them once in a war and they just shatter when he shot them. THis gun was $650 and hopefully he didnt break it yet.
I have bought my teenager a vulcan turret gun and i also game him .12 bullets from walmart and he seems to like them but now im thinking to stop buying them for him.
