Planning an Airsoft Skirmish

Article By: OnTarget Airsoft Airsoft Electric Guns. Tested, Chronographed, Guaranteed!

A successful and entertaining airsoft skirmish requires pre-planning. The first step in pre-planning an airsoft skirmish involves determining what type of airsoft skirmish you want to engage in. Let’s focus on two popular types of airsoft skirmishes, Head-to-Head and Objective oriented games. Head-to-head involves two or more teams trying to eliminate one another. Objective style is a "capture the flag" airsoft engagement requiring your team to follow through with a mission.

Head-to-Head In head-to-head airsoft skirmishes you usually have 2 teams of opposing forces. Each team will attempt to eliminate the other in various airsoft skirmish scenarios. Some examples of head-to-head are:

  1. Patrol based - One team has to move through an area looking for the opposing team. This is a search and destroy mission which involves ambush, tracking and unit movement skills. The area can be designated as enemy territory with booby traps and ambush sites opposing forces will encounter along the way. Patrol based usually requires a large area of wooded land to be effective. Airsoft MOUT (Military Operation in Urban Terrain) sites have also become popular for patrol based airsoft skirmishes. The difference here is the patrol and fighting occurs in mock towns and villages.
  2. Front Line Airsoft Skirmishes - This is true head-to-head airsoft combat. Usually two teams control equal parts of the playing field. The goal of this airsoft skirmish is a full frontal assault where both teams try to eliminate the other.

Objective Style

In Objective style airsoft skirmishes you usually have an objective to complete, while the other team tries to prevent your mission accomplishment. These are very goal oriented airsoft skirmishes, and during airsoft competitions are usually timed or scored events. Some examples of Objective style are:

  1. Hostage rescue - usually an indoor Close Quarters Battle (CQB) style airsoft skirmish. This involves one team trying to find and safely rescue a hostage, while the opposing teams tries to keep their hostage or even eliminate the hostage if the airsoft skirmish doesn’t go their way.
  2. Capture the flag - a classic objective style airsoft skirmish. One team defends their base, while the other team tries to capture it. This is probably the most popular style of airsoft skirmish today.
  3. Downed pilot or Treasure hunt - a pilot or valuable object is placed at a random spot on the airsoft skirmish field. Opposing teams try to find and secure the target. This a fun variation of capture the flag, as both teams are on the hunt and random airsoft skirmishes are bound to pop up as they encounter each other on the hunt.

Airsoft Event Planning
Airsoft Event Planning

Other Airsoft Skirmish Considerations

Scenarios - In order to add realism to any airsoft skirmish you should plan it around a theme or scenario. For example, an alien invasion airsoft skirmish.  A certain area of the field or object is considered the alien's ship, and the "humans" need to capture and destroy the ship, while the "aliens" objective is to eliminate humans, or capture their capital building on the opposite side of the field.

Some airsoft skirmishes are recreations of certain battle scenes from wars past (world war II, etc). Battle recreations require research about the event to ensure as much realism as possible. You can get so into recreations that teams may require use of authentic weapons and uniforms from that period. Another idea is to recreate a scene from a movie.  Hostage rescue or capturing a bridge are movie scenes that translate well into airsoft skirmishes.  The bottom line is to be creative in planning your airsoft skirmish scenario.  The more realistic, the more engaging and challenging it will be for the players.

Props - Another element to plan is the use of battlefield props. Certain items are often labeled as props.  For example, there can be boxes marked as explosives, and to capture these boxes means to be able to use them to eliminate opponents, or their base, or something else.  Some of these props may be assigned a point value, and if one team captures them and brings them back to their own home base, they are awarded points.  Airsoft skirmish such as this work on a "win by attrition" system, wherein the team needs to reach a certain objective but needs a specific number of points as well.

If you're someone planning airsoft skirmishes for your team or a tournament, you can see that proper planning takes weeks, maybe even months to develop and execute the perfect airsoft skirmish.  It pays to get creative, but not too complicated, of course.  However, if you put some thought into it and plan it right, it will be well worth the effort when it comes time for game day or your tournament, as the players get caught up in the fun and excitement of the perfect airsoft skirmish.

Have an idea for an airsoft skirmish you'd like to share?

i think a good one would to reinact the cilvil war. it might be dangerous to stand head-to-head, but it might be cool.

PITVIPER1 3 years ago

Alien invasion? Kind of laser taggish. Reinactments are ok but requires one side to know that they will die in a horrible way. Their are some really good ideas here. I still advocate world leaders having a spelling bee to settle disputes. lol Great post as always.

my buddies and i have a small tower(like a jungle gym) where we put a sniper rifle or aeg or something and everybody starts with a pistol and equal distance from the tower and the object is to get to the tower and get the rifle and eliminate everyone else but if you leave the tower you cannot take the rifle with you

its a real fun free-for-all game for small groups

bookworm321 2 years ago

I think these scenarios will be useful and another one I have to suggest is a building break in where one team is in a building and the other has to kill all in building.

Here are a few that we do; "Downed pilot" - a soldier is seselected to be the pilot with a radio & pistol goes out in the battlefield to hide. Once hid, the pilot radios back his location to the Rescue team. The enemy can then go in to the battlefield and attempt to locate the pilot for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes the rescue team goes in and tries to make contact with the pilot at his hiding spot, get him, and attempt to get hinm back to the starting point without him getting killed. Another battle is; make 4 teams which each team will go to the north in the battle field, another to the east, another team to the weat, and the last team to the south. At a signal or time each team seeks out and finds the other teams (staying together) and if shot becomes a "Zombie" and has to go and belong to the team who shot him. Game goes until one team has all the players OR has the most at the end of the time limit. Another battle we play; we call "the football game" - 50-50 teams where each team places there flag at their starting point. At a given signal or time both teams go out to S&D and the first team to get 2 men to the other's flag without getting shot wins. Hope that was some help

Here's one me and my friend's made play.HUNT- ok so 1-5 people are on a team vs a team with 1-10 or more players and the team with 1-10 players start at a certain starting point the same as the 1-5 team and the team that has 1-5 has to get to a end point that should be far away from them and the other team has to try and stop them.3 hits out.

We like to play a hunting game. A small number of people go out and hide. after a set time goes by the search team hunts for them. THis is especially fun with only one person hiding, but they wear a ghillie suit.

You know, that Border Patrol idea is kinda cool. lots of options and variables with that one

kris 2 years ago

I thought of this; "raindrops" it starts as a free-for all, if you are hit, you join that person's team, but if they get hit, you do not switch with them

One idea my friends and I tried was something called Assassination. The object of the game is as follows:

- Everyone at the beginning of the game everyone is given a person they are suppose to assassinate.

- You must shoot your target before the person hunting you down shoots you.

- You are not allowed to shoot anyone beside your target unless you are attacked by your assassin.

- If you are attacked and you thwart your assassin's attempt to kill you by shooting them they are still alive but must give you a minute to run off and escape.

- Once you assassinate your target they must tell you who they were trying to assassinate and now that person becomes your new target.

- You now you've won your new target turns out to be you.

we play president where there is 1 president with a pistol(optional) and a riot shield surrounded by 5-7 guards with aeg's. the terrorists, team of 3-5 hide along a designated road or path where the president is going to walk. if the president gets shot that team loses.

beardfasay 2 years ago

so my friends and i play this game called beast generally you have one guy go out in the woods he is the superior beast then everyone else is normal and trying to kill the beast who starts with no gun the beast gets, however many people are going after him times 10,shots till he dies but when he tags someone they die and he can pick up there gun and shoot it he can also diside to leave the person tagged dead of can turn them into a beast minion who get 20 shots till they die. its a fun game and its best played in the woods or old factories with alot of people.

airsoftBoSsSnIpEr 24 months ago

my friends and i usually play "behind enemy lines" one person in full camo or a ghillie suit takes on a team of 8 or more. except they dont have a gun. they use a sharpie and "stab" one person at a time until everyone or the one guy is dead. the large team has to stay at certain points where there in view of each other but cant leave until they see the enemy. this is best played right before dark as it is harder to see the person in the ghillie suit

mr mystery 24 months ago

I thought of doing two sniper teams(2 snipers 1 guard 1 scout per team)behind the enemy lines while doing an elimination match not that original but a pretty good idea and it works!

Husky Ninja 23 months ago

Me and my friends play President: one team has to protect the president who is secured in a bunker/tower (jungle gym). The terrorists have to eliminate the president before the time runs out. Terrorist/Bodyguards = 3 shots-dead, President = 1 shot-dead.

BLANK 21 months ago

what we do is "briefcase" one team has the case and the other team has to get it, if you get shot your out. any one on the protecting team can hold it but if they get shot the person has it has to drop it where he is and any team member or attacker can get it or protect it. you stop when teams are out or if the case is stolen

jpammer 21 months ago

swat scenario were 1-2 takes the roll of a criminal and they hide out in a shed or some kind of base. and the swat objective is to breach the hide out and take out or arrest the criminal(s).

BLAKAI 21 months ago

My favorite scenario is the president game, one person is designated the president. That person does not receive a weapon then he/she is given body guards him and his body guards must move from point A to B without letting the president die. They must do this while facing opposition from "assassins"

Whats a cool idea for my sons birthday party?

South Dakota 20 months ago

Dollar Bill:

Clip a dollar bill to everyone's vest. Once shot, that person will lay down for others to run up and take the dollar bill. If you shoot someone and manage to make it over to that person, you can take the dollar bill and put it in your pocket. 4 kills could equal 4 dollars or you can camp a kill or try to take out people trying to pick up dollars.

Team or all v all.

can also play where you pick up their dollar and add to your dollar(s). this game mode comes with a set time limit so survivors have more $$$.

We play a game called double-agent. I have a fairly large team, of 48 people, and we split them up into defending and assaulting teams around the bunker, and a double agent. noone knows who the double agent is. in the defending team, there is a double-agent, who in the running around and chaos involved in an assault from all sides, must asassinate members of his 'team' with a colt.25 (any pistol will do) or a plastic knife which folds in when pressure is applied, creating the impression that the person has been stabbed. This is harder than it seems, as the double agent may be spotted, and shot, or shot by his own team as they invade the bunker.

Our bunker is a relatively large complex, built on private land, so this may not be feasible with smaller forts or bunkers.

I play capture the flags where three flags are in the center and two teams on ether side try to capture the flag and bring it back to their side. It is 2 lives. If you get hit once you go back to your side. The game ends when the team has at least two flags at their starting point

We play a game type called hunted it needs a group of at least 4. 2 (maybe 3 depending on size of group) are hunted; they get one clip of ammo only and have to reach a certain point (this has to be some distance away, ideally in a populated enemy base) the hunted also get a 60 second head start depending on the distance of the objective however the hunted cannot reach the objective in this time limit. The hunters carry whatever they want, The hunted win if one of them reaches the objective, the hunters win if they eliminate all the hunted, the hunters have to spend 20 seconds in the dead zone if shot, they then respawn in the base. This game type is really hard if played properly but who cares its still awesome

My friends and I play a game called kill the sniper. we have one person stand on a deck (if you don't have a deck, find a swuingset or something like that) and we call that the "sniper". if we don't have a sniper rifle, we usually just give him the best gun. we then have to try and shoot him. it's really difficult if you have a deck because there is a whole bunch of stuff he can hide behind. it's really fun. to put it simply, it's 1 vs. all, but the 1 is allowed to hide anywhere, while the rest have to be visible.

Lucus 16 months ago

This scenario is called "Bank Robbery".

Teams: Robbers, Cops (Guards)

Props:

5-10 Taped stacks of fake money

A close able box or suitcase

One area for the "bank", two guards with pistols are guarding the money. Bank robbers attack. Once they kill the guards, the guards run back and meet up with the Cops and then the cops attack the robbers. During this the robbers have to collect the money and place them in the box/suitcase and get it too a certain area.

Ps: To make the game more fun add a "mole" to the robbers. The mole is trying to escape with the money by himself and can either kill his team mates or just run off with the money.

One of my friends owns a lot of wooded land. The terrain is great. There is an abandoned mobile home on one lot that is surrounded by trees and large logs. More often that not we have uneven teams, so we do Hostage games. 2 "terrorists" are inside the house with a hostage. Their objective is to hold off the attacking force, which is trying to rescue the hostage. The hostage is able to use any means necessary to escape to safety. (Once, I was on the rescue team, the hostage stole a gun that a terrorist left lying around. He shot a terrorist with it and ran to safety. It was epic!!) The terrorists are allowed to barricade sections of the house, i.e. a back room or hallway, but are NOT allowed to barricade a both doors.

REMEMBER! ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!

Hi there! One scenario is infiltrating and carrying on with the mission. A small group of spec ops team will infiltrate a small bunker with an envelope containing information on who the VIP on another bunker is... after obtaining the info, they must then carry out with it and kill the VIP, only then and there will they know who to kill... Mission Failure means getting wiped out or VIP alive after say 30 minutes... Success means VIP dead or all combatants dead. I'm calling this scenario "Big Hit."

Please visit my blog! thanks!

I know Rp doesn't have much of a place in airsoft but We included unit types, it kind of emulated Alliance Of Valiant Arms, Pointman (smg, multi shottys etc etc...) Rifleman(Semi auto non snipers, auto rifles) and of course sniper

But we also included a "Medic" that could only carry a pistol, mock gauze, and an bb grenade if he bought it himself, everyone carried a timer if they were hit they hit start to start a countdown on themself and if the medic character got to the player without dying and touched them with the mock gauze for a minimum of 3 seconds, they can go down one more time but after your down that 2nd time your out until next round, 3 scenarios had been in place and an extra hostage situation.

first we played Head to head, we had a "credits" system in play, for every kill you can use the next tier of weapons (We have extras for everyone) you start with a pistol and upgrade when you go back to "base" (Kind of like "the gun game" wager match for black ops.

Then we played an S&D match, the players had to find 2 objectives before going to defuse the bomb, 1 was the location of the suitcase (Map) and the "abort codes"

The 3rd was a 1 vs. all match We called it "Lone Wolf", 1 player was allowed to hide and all the others had to be in the open, the 1 got the best weapon (usually automatic) not much else to it, and the hostage situation match was a group of 3 on each side a key difference is the terrorist team may take a hostage or downed friendly unit (With timer still running after down) as a human shield (If one team kills a hostage that team forfeits the match

My friends and I play milsim games like special ops missions. A team of 2 are the special ops and everyone else are the insergants. The insergants choose a leader. The insergants don't know the spec ops soldier's objective, whick makes it harder for the in sergants. the spec ops usually have to assasinate the leader, or plant a bomb in the insergants base, or rescue a hostage.

What me and my friends do is we take an l96 sniper rifle and we have a sniper spotter team and the sniper and spotter start out at one end of the battle field and slowly make their way towards the other end of the battle field where the enemies are (the enemies are patrolling a certain location and pretend they do not know there is a sniper team coming for them) and the objective of the game is for the sniper and the spotter to kill all the enemies without being noticed. this game works best at night or else the sniper and spotter would easily be seen. very challenging for the sniper and spotter but it is very fun

The Unknown 9 months ago

Here is an idea. For 2 or more players. some one hides an object (fake bomb, briefcase, ect). Both teams choose starting/respawning spots on different sides of map. both teams have to find the object that was hidden and return it to a designated spot in between the starting spots. if u are hit u return to starting spot for ten seconds then u can return to battlefield. (Optinal put extra ammo in the object so teams might not return it right away but hide it and use ammo. May put a twist on the game.)

5-10 people make a base and must “secure” it, the may have any weapons and gear. A team of 2 people come in and try to capture the base. Once hit, the hit person must lay down “dead” until some one revives them. You may only revive a person once.

At our group in Dormansland, UK (We are on facebook and not every one has like us yet, @ Dormansland Airsoft Group. the pic is not us as we are getting real pics up soon). We play little 4-5 hour military simulations where you split the people into 3/4 teams (5-10 per team is best!, all getting a base. Each team has a list of objectives to stick by, some with times (e.g. plan an ambush and stay at the ambush site for 10 minutes and eliminate any enemies that you see). You can split the place into sectors for clearer instructions which can deliberately make teams fight such as one team has to defend this giant pit thing in the ground, while 2 minutes later another comes trying to throw a smoke into pit basically leaving all out warfare for control and it's who ever completes the most objectives (2 points per objective) minus deaths on the team (-1 point per death) pretty much wins.

Its really great as you keep your ammo with you as the only breaks are returning to base for 10 minutes between objectives.

Personally my favorite is Juggernot. Basically, you get a cardboard box and staple fabric to it so it can be worn. He goes against 4- unlimited people and keeps battling until his armor (the box) is penetrated and has visible holes in it.
