DBOYS BOYI BI-5281 M4 Series

Great Airsoft Firepower under $250

D-Boys Airsoft Company (formerly BOYI Airsoft) has been producing mid-range airsoft guns for some time now. They recently changed their name to D-Boys in order to re-establish themselves as a quality mid-range airsoft gun manufacturer. Some of the earlier models made by BOYI were plagued with design flaws. But they listened to their distributors, redesigned most of their offerings and revamped the company. The result is quality, long-lasting D-Boy Airsoft guns. Part of the D-Boys M4 airsoft Series (BIM4 as they call it) and modeled after the mk12 Mod0 SPR (special operations Rifle), the Bi-5281 is no exception to their pursuit of excellence.

The real steel Mk12 Mod0 is a United States Special Purpose Rifle (SPR) being used by special forces units in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). The Mk12 SPR is a modified variation of the AR-15/M-16 rifles. The Dboys B-5281 Airsoft Rifle is a perfect replica of this firearm.

One thing that you'll notice with this and other D-Boys Rifles is the liberal use of metal parts. The Bi-5281 keeps the D-Boys design methodology going with a solid, full-metal version of the Mk12 SPR. It comes standard with a great RIS System (metal), Harris Bi-Pod system, Tactical sling, 8.4v 1500mAh Battery, Charger, clearing rod and of course the Junk BB pack (My recommendation is to toss the BBs that come with any AEG). With all the components attached and a full magazine it weighs in around 12lbs. Not the lightest gun in the airsoft world but solid enough for an accurate sniper rifle. the upper metal receiver is solid and tight with little or no wobble. The grip and Stock are heavy grade ABS plastic, very solid. The magazine is the standard hi-Cap, 200-round ratchet type magazine.

The internals on this AEG sport a 7mm Bearing, reinforced metal gearbox. You'll get reliable 330-350FPS out of the box with .20g BBs. The inner barrel is brass and it has an adjustable metal hop-up. This gun will definitely go head to head with its TM and CA counterparts! The stock, while kind of drab, is hollow and could accommodate some of the bigger batteries. But, the 8.4v 1500maH battery included is adequate for use right out of the box. You may want to check out the modification some people are doing to this gun to maximize performance. Just do search the web; there are a dozen or so sites with great recommendations. The gun breaks down easily so even a novice should have no problems taking it apart and reassembling. Very important for maintenance and care of the weapon. The rear sight is the authentic flip up ARMS type. Both front and rear sites are metal.

How does it shoot...Great! The Bi-5281 has a high rate of fire on par with most AEG's in the mid-range category and the chrono pegged it around 380 FPS Using TSD Tactical .20g BBs. Accuracy was excellent and consistent at 100 feet and started to open up a bit at 125 feet. The Magazine fed very well, with little or no issues. I would be very confident using this as a reliable, medium to long range airsoft sniper rifle. This Harris Bipod itself is worth every penny of the Sub $250 price tag.

Are you sure you have the hop up set right. I had my hop up and open sights dialed in at 100 feet. That sucker is dead on with .25g BBs!!

I just got this gun not to long ago, it's been working great. I bought it off a friend who bought it orignally from airsplat. He already had a tighbore installed in it. I've taken it to about 2 skirmishs and one was in the winter. For some reason after about an hour in the cold, the gun started just dropping the bbs about 20ft infront of me. Do you know what would cause this problem? I think it was the cold. Do you know if it had anything to do with the tightbore? I heard the gears in the gear box get chewed up pretty quickly though. Do you have any advice on what brand or type of gears i should buy to replace the broken ones if this should happen to me? Thanks very much for the help!

I doubt it was the tight bore, that guns got enought punch behind it to warrant use of the tightbore. Although I have heard issues with using the tightbore barrel (not sure if its the quality of the installation). All Gearboxes and motors will wear out eventually. You'll have to ask yourself how old is the gun. The cold could have been a factor, especially if the gearbox had not been "cleaned". The manufacturers love to pack gearboxes full of grease. In the cold the grease can get a little thick, causing undue stress on the gears and motor. Check on Airsoftforum.com or airsoftretreat.com to see what aftermarket gearboxes will work on this gun.

Ok thanks, the gun is about 2 months old and the gearbox was never cleaned out. I should get to that but I've never opened up a gearbox before and don't want to break it. I found a site that should help with the disassembly. Thanks again.

I have this gun now for 2 YEARS, but I have a problem with it now. And I NEED your help, really.

Everytime I charge the battery the gun shoots about 15 rounds only. And I changed the charger and it happend again! Then I measured the voltage of the battery and it was normal (8,32 V out of 8,4) it indicates that the battery is a bit old but it should still work at that voltage.

So what could be wrong?

Sounds like you need a new battery. They do go bad after a while. It's not that they cannot produce needed voltage, but it cannot hold a charge anymore. 2-years is a good run out of a stock China-made battery.

Thank you for the opinion:)

I've been lookin to buy a quality airsoft rifle for my first AEG and i have a few questions that you might be able to help me with. 1) Is this really a solid metal gun? what isn't metal on it? 2) how long should this last me under normal usage conditions? 3)i heard that some AEGs have a delay from when the trigger is pulled to when the BB is actually fired... is this true with this particular gun? 4) does this rifle ever go on sale and can i possible get a package deal if i buy a couple?

thanks for your help... great site by the way

Chris,

Yes it is, except the stock and the pistol grip. Unfortunately we have been out of stock for a while and have not been able to get any back in.

The delay is hardly noticable, a few milliseconds.

The lifespan of the gearbox and motor depends on a lot of things. Battery voltage, type of battery, quality of BBs, how well you maintain and lubricate it, if you drop it, how often you play, etc. Bottom line all AEGs are mechnical and will wear out eventually. The thing to realize is it does not cost much to rebuild a gearbox when things do break. As long as you have an AEG with a solid body you can replace or rebuild the gearbox when needed. A lot of players like the Dboys, JG, & Cyma metal gearbox guns because you pay a lot less up front and maybe once a year you rebuild the gearbox, or do upgrades, etc.

hey i'm new to airsoft and i would like to play with friends at the local airsoft spot... it's a wooded area about a half a football field long, do you think that this would be a good AEG for this type of area or should i be looking for a different kind of gun?
