The German MP40 is one of the most famous submachine guns of the World War II era. The MP-40 was the primary submachine gun of the German Wehrmacht between 1938 and 1945. While there are a few airsoft versions of this classic machine gun currently on the market, the new SRC GEN 3 MP40 is one of the best yet.

Star Rainbow Corporation (SRC), a Taiwanese airsoft manufacturer, has done a great job with their latest GEN 3 entry, the SRC MP40 (GE-640TM-III). Weighing in at a solid 7lbs 6 ounces (unloaded), SRC worked out many of the issues plaguing other brands of MP40 airsoft replicas, to create a true AEG contender.

External: SRC really paid attention to detail in the design. Like the real steel MP40, there is not a fire selector switch. The SRC MP40 is full-Auto only, like the real MP40. The only downside of this authentic styling is lack of a safety mode. Extra care must be taken when loaded to avoid friendly fire incidents. SRC incorporated the authentic Bakelite fore and pistol grips. World War 2 collectors will love the authentic German marking present on the receivers. The gun itself is solid and tight, and looks to be an almost exact replica of the world war two submachine gun. The folding stock is tight and locks into place folded or extended. The airsoft gun itself is nicely balanced and has the feel of a true World War Two era firearm.

Internals: The SRC MP40 sports the new GEN 3 reinforced, 8mm bearing, metal gearbox. With steel gears, aluminum cylinders, piston heads, and spring guides. All in all, it is a very tight gearbox, which will last a long time between rebuilds. The new Ultra High Torque SRC motor is also present, along with a one-piece metal hop up chamber. On the trigger SRC wisely went with a MOSFET control, the latest in Airsoft circuitry.

Functionality: The obvious feature on this gun (that will either be loved or hated, no in between...we think it's pretty cool and adds realism), is the Electric Blow Back (EBB) recoil action. The charging handles move back with every shot, simulating a real firearm action. For those that dislike EBB guns, with a little work it can be disabled (requires opening the gearbox). The SRC MP40 comes with a metal, 280-round wind-up magazine, something many MP40 AEG’s lack. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be compatible with other MP40 AEGs. Out of the box, with .2g TSD BBs, it shoots between 283-297 FPS. Rate of fire is around 12-13rps with an 8.4v 1200mAH mini-battery. The battery compartment is tight, but will fit a 9.6v 1200mAh battery. Most WWII collectors will want to stick with the 8.4v battery. The slower 8.4v rate of fire simulates that of the real MP40. You might be able to fit a few more mAh in the gun using a custom battery pack. Changing the battery can be a little tricky the 1st few times you do it, involving carefully separating the upper and lower receivers. We say carefully, as the bottom of the receiver sports a narrow strip of steel that could bend if you are not careful. That strip of steel is essential to making the upper and lowers fit together nice and tight, with no rattle (did you hear me AGM owners, I said NO Reciever Rattle!). Once the receivers are together, you do not have to worry about the steel strip.

Accuracy: Our test were limited to our 50 foot warehouse range. At 50 Feet, even in full-auto bursts, the SRC Mp4 was right on and provided a tight grouping. Hitting a target out to 100 feet shouldn't be a problem once you get the hop-up set.

Overall, the downsides are minor and overshadowed by the awesome design, components, and performance of this gun. If you love World War II Airsoft Guns, the SRC MP40 is going to be your favorite!

  • EBB (for some)

Just got my SRC MP-40 today in the mail from On Target Airsoft. Out of the box this is a pretty hard hitter, the markings and waffenampts are a nice touch. I took it out and compared it to one of my AGM MP-40's and it was no comparison. The EBB feature is awesome and works great, the gun also has a nice noise to it and pretty darn accurate. The cyclic is faster than the AGM gun (both using the stock batteries) and alot faster than the real MP-40 but that only adds to the fun of it. The simulated red bakelite is just the right tone as well. On a scale of 1 to 10 I can easily rate this one a 10. By far the best airsoft MP-40 to date in my opinion.

@ Andrew. I don't quite see your point. In war there are winners and losers, ask the Japanese. If you don't wish to buy this gun there are plenty out there to choose from. Your uniform if it is real, I would keep it in plastic and never use it. May be a collectors item.
